Introduction to French Scribe Layout" workshops provided by Traditional Timber Frame Homes by Marc Guilhemjouan include those offered to The Timber Framers Guild of North America (TFGNA), the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), and courses for professionals and the public.
The Guild and BCIT workshops consisted of designing and constructing a timber frame structure: a gazebo for the TFGNA, which was attended by professional timber framers; and an 18' X 24' bent for BCIT, attended by carpentry students with little or no timber framing experience. The primary difference between the two workshops was that the course offered for Guild members incorporated French Scribe techniques, working with irregular timbers (an advantage unique to the French Scribe system, not known or used by contemporary methods), while the BCIT course used planed wood. Although the participants of these two workshops had very different background experience in timber framing, the French Scribe techniques being taught were new to them all.
