F REQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

W hat is timber framing?

Timber framing is a method of construction which has existed for centuries. Joinery and dimensioned timbers and knee braces are pegged together to create "bents" which are assembled to form a self supporting skeleton of a structure. The function of the walls is to enclose the structure, not to bear loads. One of the most commonly known forms of joinery is the mortise and tenon, however, many other connections can be used. Determining which type of joinery is suitable is dependant on several variables including compression, traction and flexion, and how the connection will react to these factors. The result is a distinctive interior with superior strength and stability.

W hy do you call your work "traditional" timber framing?

Timber framing is an ancient method of construction. Our homes our designed and constructed using a system called French Scribe which was developed in the 13th century. These methods have been in use in France since that time and evolved through the ages. This knowledge has been passed from generation to generation through professional training, and it is this knowledge that we bring to each project.

W hat is the difference between timber framing and post and beam?

There are two major differences between the two methods. In timber framing, the transfer of the load of the structure moves through the vertical components; while in post and beam, horizontal beams, which are positioned on vertical beams, dispense the weight of the structure.
The other common difference is found in the connections. Timber framing uses a variety of types of joinery, and timbers are held together with pegs. Post and beam construction may use joinery, however, other forms of connections are common (e.g., metal fasteners, spikes).

D o you provide design services?

We provide full design-build services. One of the most flexible construction techniques available, timber framing allows infinite building and design applications. Timber frame homes are a suitable choice in any setting - from urban environments to the countryside. Timber frame allows you to use any exterior treatment or material - brick, wood, masonry or stone.

D o you work with recycled timbers?

In addition to working with new or recycled wood, we have the unique ability to also work with regular, planed beams as well as irregular, unplaned timbers. The centuries old method of timber framing we use was developed before the existence of computers and calculators, so it was necessary for the founders of the system to discover how to work with irregular beams. As this information has not been lost and we are practicing it today, we are able to use weathered, uneven timbers in new construction without compromising these much appreciated qualities.

H ow much will a timber frame home cost?

Typically, a custom timber frame will cost more than a regular 2 x 4 construction. The price could range anywhere from 10% or 20% above the square foot price of a custom stick frame project to many more percentage points. Timber framing techniques are very different than standard 2 X 4 building techniques. Every piece of wood utilized in a timber frame structure is considered individually, sized, measured and cut according to their particular role in the engineering and esthetic principles of the design. Each connection is equally considered individually for the same reasons. There exist many wood species used for timber frames; each have their own characteristics and uses, and vary in price. Labour costs are generally more expensive because more time is consumed in the designing, planning and cutting stages. Designing, planning, labor and material costs depend on the final design and its intrinsic complexity. A timber frame design can be simple to very complex. Every project is unique. The costs for materials are always kept to the minimum and are not wasted. This energy efficient, long lasting form of construction provides many benefits which are appealing to homeowners.
