I ntroduction to French Scribe Layout - Mail-Out Course

Traditional Timber Frame Homes by Marc Guilhemjouan has taught technical drawing courses using the French Scribe system to participants who have a broad range of professions, backgrounds and experience, all of whom have a common bond - an intense ardent interest and passion for the craft of traditional timber framing. Professional carpenters, engineers, and amateur novices are among those who have participated in the courses.

The Introduction to French Scribe Layout Technical Drawing course was created to respond to the educational needs of professional timber framers, carpenters, architects, engineers, and those wishing an introduction to traditional European timber framing methods. Recognizing that the techniques utilized in the French Scribe system can be applied under numerous applications, the course covers the basic rules of the rembarrement.

The Demand for Formal Timber Frame Education

Timber framing is said to be an ancient building means that is undergoing a "revival" in North America. In response to the growing awareness of the craft, and the ensuing demand from home owners, evidence of this "revival" is seen in the number of timber frame companies appearing in the market place, and the development of magazines and trade shows specifically aimed toward the timber frame buyer. We are also seeing more and more "home building" television shows which have introduced the subject to viewers, resulting in increased awareness and demand for information.

Introduction to French Scribe Layout has been developed by Marc Guilhemjouan to respond to the growing demand for information about timber framing:

  • While there are few timber frame books and schools in North America, none offer thorough training in French Scribe methods
  • In an effort to network and share information, international guilds and organizations for timber framers organize group projects and publish periodicals as a means of teaching and learning their craft. Many timber framers are "self-taught"; thus, the demand for specific training
  • Amended versions of the French Scribe Layout course, authored by Marc Guilhemjouan have been published in "The Journal" of the Timber Framers Guild of North America, and in the British journal, "Mortise and Tenon"
  • Several workshops on the French Scribe Layout have been facilitated by Marc Guilhemjouan, including the 1994 Centennial Museum /Atlantic Challenge Pavilion Project for the Timber Framers Guild of North America in Penetanguishene, Ontario, Canada, and the 1995 Timber Frame Bent Project for the British Columbia Institute of Technology Faculty in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada
  • The Introduction to French Scribe Layout course, created and taught by Marc Guilhemjouan, has been successfully completed by many professional timber framers, structural engineers, carpenters, and lay people; some of whom have traveled 3,000 miles to participate in the course, stating they could not find training of this level elsewhere in North America.

I NTRODUCTION TO FRENCH SCRIBE LAYOUT
    TECHNICAL DRAWING AND PRACTICAL/IN-CLASS WORKSHOPS

    Course Description

This program is designed to introduce the French Scribe methods of timber framing, including "Technical Drawing" and "Practical" hands-on experience. In a friendly and dynamic classroom/workshop setting, participants learn how to apply specific geometrical formulas and calculations, and are guided step by step on how to design, draw, plot, cut and assemble a project using traditional French Scribe techniques.

Professional workshops are offered to professional institutions (e.g., colleges, universities, trade unions and industry). Public workshops are provided for the professional and hobbyist alike. Workshops are tailored to the requirements of the hiring institution or of the group participants. For example, course segments "Technical Drawing" and "Practical" can be taught in two separate workshops, allowing for more practice time and thorough learning. Workshops are 40 hours minimum in duration, depending on course content: Technical Drawing and/or Practical, and complexity of the workshop project.

Workshops are organized according to demand. Institutions and individuals interested in organizing a workshop should contact Traditional Timber Frame Homes by Marc Guilhemjouan for schedules and program details. Individuals wishing to join a workshop are encouraged to form a group of a minimum of 10 persons interested in participating in a workshop. Individuals who wish to join a workshop on their own should contact Traditional Timber Frame Homes by Marc Guilhemjouan so that they can be included in an up-coming workshop.

All workshops are mobile and can be taught in a variety of settings, anywhere in the world.

Who Will Benefit From This Course?

This "Introduction to French Scribe Layout" course will benefit "do-it-yourself builders", professional timber framers, engineers, carpenters, architects, etc. This course covers the rules of French Scribe. The methods can be applied in compliment to computerized methods or may be used on their own. The system, while designed for timber framing, can be applied to any type of construction. The only limits to using French Scribe are those imposed by the user.
