Chapelle Sainte Agnès

CHAPELLE SAINTE-AGNES

I was approached in November, 1993 by a French Compagnon carpenter Thierry Pautard. He was in charge of the construction of a little church in Glen Sutton (QC, Canada). He made it clear that the project was being by traditional methods. He informed me that the owner of the church, Mrs Henrietta ANTONY had secured a roofer who claimed he could provide quality slate roofing for the project. After two weeks on the job, the other professionals (French Compagnon carpenter Thierry Pautard and French Compagnon stone-cutter Michel DODIER) complained that the roofer was not qualified. The other problem was that the roofer had been paid in advance for his services and it was not possible to simply fire him and hire a qualified professional to complete the job.
T he carpenter arranged for me to meet with the owner in order that I inspect the work that had been done. After seeing the work, I advised that everything that had been done needed to be removed and the work would have to start over, saving as much of the original material as possible. During my first visit on the site, I took some photos of the work that was already done by the roofer company.
T he owner of the church made a contract with me and it was concluded that I will be paid by hour to take charge of the roofing portion of the job and supervise the roofing company to finish their job. The contractor was obviously not pleased with my participation. He was aware that I had the necessary skills and knowledge that he lacked far this job.
T he job began on Monday, September 13, 1993 and finished November 18,1993, after I contributed 336 hours of work. When the contractor realized that his bid of $15,000.00 for the job was nearly 1/4 of the actual amount of the job, he began to send his crew to work on other jobs, leaving one worker on this job. The contractor was on site for 11 days, his brother for 8 days, and an apprentice far 5 days, and one worker 20 days.
I ended up alone finishing the job in the middle of a snowy winter, dealing with many problems the contractor had created. He had purchased poor quality materials, and had not ordered enough for the job. To create further problems for me, when materials arrived on-site, they were late. He took every opportunity to make the production difficult so that it would appear that I was incompetent.
H e took photos of the work I had done for use in his own portfolio. He was taking little risk in doing this, as he had a contract far the job in hand.
W hen I finished this job I received a letter of reference and much verbal support from the owner.
S hortly after, the roofing contractor approached me to work for him at the hourly rate I had received an the chapel job. With no other work prospects, I accepted and was responsible for several roofing and slate roofing jobs with this company. I gave the contractor a book from France which covers roofing techniques. Some more views of the finish slate roof and details of the nice work of stone-cutter realize by the French compagnon Michel DODIER. I regret to not be able to show some views of the carpentry realize by the French compagnon Thierry PAUTARD.
