The Wood Hand Book
Publisher’s Note

The Wood Handbook is one of the best-kept secrets in woodworking literature.
The USDA Forest Products Laboratory has brought together in this volume
more useful information about wood than one can find in any other single volume
in print today. The range of information is both remarkable and detailed. It is a credit
to the Forest Service of the USDA and a godsend to woodworkers everywhere.

All the information in the original 1999 USDA version of the Handbook is included
here with one change; we used sequential pagination in preference to pagination by
chapter as was the style of the original. To ease communication between users of
different editions, we include an equivalency table on page 464.

Cover Credit: The model on the cover was made by Marc Guilhemjouan as an example of how he builds timber-frame homes using the French scribe system. The model is 41 1/2’’ w X 12’’ d X 29’’ h.
The cover is a close-up of one corner to show the fine details of this traditional form of timber framing.
